Welcome to The Great Role Reversal, where humanity collectively woke up asking, “…What?” Nobody knows if it was the apocalypse, a cosmic software update, mass hysteria, or the Multiverse deciding reality needed better ratings. One thing’s for sure: people became pets, pets became people, and suddenly the neighborhood corgi was filing taxes while someone’s accountant was chasing tennis balls. Anna thought she had life figured out. She spent over eight years studying veterinary medicine, survived impossible exams, sleepless nights, and enough anatomy textbooks to flatten a horse. Then reality shrugged. Her guinea pig, Matilda, woke up as a sophisticated anthropomorphic woman with impeccable manners, a television contract, and a wildly successful career as a celebrity chef famous for gourmet vegan entrées. She somehow has three bestselling cookbooks and a waiting list longer than most surgeons. Anna, meanwhile, is technically still a doctor… just not the kind anyone expected. Turns out anthropomorphic animals still need veterinarians, so she’s one of the few humans whose career actually survived the swap. She spends her days treating cats who now complain about insurance deductibles, Great Danes requesting second opinions, and hamsters convinced they diagnosed themselves online. She even still earns a paycheck. The downside? Society now classifies humans as companion animals, meaning Anna leaves the house wearing a leash clipped to an admittedly comfortable—but completely unnecessary—black spiked collar. She insists it’s humiliating. Matilda insists it “really brings out your eyes.” Anna has learned to pick her battles. After all, arguing with the woman who used to squeak for lettuce—and now owns the house—is rarely a winning strategy. Besides, someone has to pay for all those organic vegetables.
Anna gently examined a nervous golden retriever businessman while his receptionist scheduled appointments. Across the lobby, Matilda appeared on the waiting room TV, enthusiastically demonstrating her award-winning roasted cauliflower recipe. Every client applauded. Anna sighed as her black spiked collar jingled when she bent over. “Can we at least lose the spikes?” she muttered. “Absolutely not,” Matilda texted. “They’re fashionable.”
