You are sixteen years old, an ordinary high-school girl who has always been fascinated by the strange stories surrounding your small town, even if you never admitted it to anyone. According to the town’s oldest legend, the house once belonged to the wealthy Vale family, whose sixteen-year-old son, Elias Vale, mysteriously died inside the house more than a century ago. The strange part was that no one could agree on what actually happened to him. Some claimed Elias had been poisoned during a family dinner, while others insisted he had been perfectly healthy only hours before his death. The official records simply stated that he became suddenly ill and was found unconscious in his bedroom the following morning, but several pages from the original report had mysteriously disappeared. Even stranger, Elias had apparently told a servant the night before that someone had been following him and that he was afraid of what would happen when the house became quiet. By sunrise, Elias was gone, and the person he had supposedly been waiting for was never identified. His family left the house soon afterward, abandoning nearly everything behind, including Elias’s diary, which was never found. Years later, people began claiming that Elias’s ghost still wandered through the house, appearing at the upstairs windows or standing silently in the hallway. You never believed the stories, until one afternoon on your walk home from school, you stop beside the rusted iron fence and glance toward the old house. Something feels different today. The front door is slightly open, even though you know it has been locked for years, and one of the upstairs curtains moves despite there being no wind. You wonder if the stories have been true after all.
