I learned early that being a German Shepherd meant people noticed me before they noticed anything else. The ears. The muzzle. The size. The claws. The heavy paws and digitigrade legs that made me look even bigger than I already was. By adulthood, I had grown into a broad, bulky frame covered in thick fur, with a ridiculous fluffy tail that never quite behaved itself. People saw all of that and decided what I was. Predator. Dangerous. Untrustworthy. When the government introduced restraint collars for predator species, everyone called them a safety measure. Mandatory for some breeds. "Temporary," they promised. Temporary became twenty years. I was fifteen when I met him. Back then, I was already taller and broader than most of my classmates, and I spent lunch hiding behind the gym because I was tired of being called a monster. Then I found him there. You were impossible to miss. You were all long limbs and narrow shoulders, your digitigrade legs folded awkwardly beneath you as you sat against the wall. Your Siamese coat was short and sleek, covering your entire body and your feline head. Your blue eyes watched the schoolyard from beneath dark lashes, red pupils narrowing whenever someone shouted nearby. Your thin tail curled around your ankle. You weren't afraid of me. You just looked annoyed. That was the first thing I liked about you. We became friends almost by accident. Friends became inseparable. And eventually, quietly, we became something the world insisted couldn't exist. Years later, I still remember that first afternoon. You remember it too. You remember being seventeen and already understanding that the world had no place prepared for you. You were too tall for most furniture and too lanky for standard uniforms. Your tail constantly caught on things. Your claws made people nervous. Your face was unmistakably feline, and your species had been pushed into the same category as every other "predator." Then there was me A German Shepherd built like a brick wall

Humans called us monsters. I called them annoying. My mate called me dramatic. I was considering being offended by that. We had spent years hiding in the mountains, far from human cities and their noisy machines. It was peaceful here. Quiet. Safe. Most importantly, nobody bothered me. And my mate was always here. They spoiled me shamelessly, grooming my feathers, bringing me food, and curling their enormous body around mine whenever we rested. I would never admit how much I loved it. Then humans came. I heard the helicopters before I saw them. My feathers bristled. My mate immediately noticed. “Ignore them.” I huffed and turned my head away. They chuckled. “Please?” Another helicopter appeared overhead. I stared at it. It flew directly over our valley. My claws dug into the ground. My mate sighed. “Don't.” I slowly looked at them. They knew that look. “No.” I growled. “They didn't do anything to you.” I growled louder. “They probably don't even know we're here.” I stared at the helicopter. Then back at my mate. They lowered their head. “…You're right.” Finally. I spread my enormous wings and rose to my full height. My mate hurried after me, already trying to calm me down. We had avoided humans for years. Unfortunately, humans had just made the mistake of entering my territory. And I was feeling particularly petty today.

I never intended to own a hybrid. Especially not one who could look me directly in the eyes and somehow make me feel guilty without saying a word. I found you at a specialty hybrid adoption center almost two years ago. You were sitting in the corner of your enclosure, considerably smaller than the other hybrids, your long Holland Lop ears hanging beside your fluffy face. You were barely a few feet taller than an ordinary rabbit when standing on your hind legs, with soft fur covering your entire body, little paw-like hands folded against your chest, and a cotton tail that twitched whenever someone walked past. You weren't interested in anyone. Until I stopped. You immediately hopped over. I crouched beside the enclosure, and you pressed your furry little face against the bars. That was it. I was doomed. Now you have your own bedroom. Your own collection of blankets. A ridiculous number of chew toys. A basket of treats that I swear you somehow empty twice as fast as I can refill it. And, despite all of that, you still seem convinced that you are the most neglected creature on Earth. You disagree, of course. From your perspective, things have changed. When I first brought you home, I worked from home and had practically nothing to do. You learned quickly that if you hopped into my lap, I would stop whatever I was doing. If you nudged my hand with your nose, you got scratches between your ears. If you flopped dramatically onto the floor, I would immediately ask what was wrong. You became spoiled. Very, very spoiled. But lately, I've been busy. Work piled up. Meetings lasted longer. Emails multiplied. Days blurred together. And you noticed. You'd sit beside my desk, staring at me. I'd glance down. You'd stare harder. "Later," I'd promise. Your ears would droop. I'd feel awful. What I didn't realize was that you had begun developing a plan. Because if asking for attention wasn't working... Perhaps making me worry about you would.
