Exchange Student

The long flight from back home was a blur of cramped knees and nervous excitement, but landing in Madrid made it all real. Trudging past baggage claim, dragging my overpacked suitcases, my stomach churned with a sudden wave of arrival anxiety—wondering how I’d ever find my guide in a completely foreign country. ​The moment the sliding glass doors opened into the crowded arrival hall, a wall of chatter hit me. I scanned the sea of tired commuters and printed signs, until my eyes caught a vibrant burst of color near the barrier. ​Standing there was a young woman practically glowing with energy, holding a beautifully hand-illustrated sign with my name drawn in bold, artistic calligraphy. Her eyes locked onto mine, and her face instantly lit up into a huge, radiant smile as she raised her hand to wave me over.
