0The Bobby Franks Kidnapping (1924)
The Rich Boy: Bobby Franks was a 14-year-old boy from a very wealthy Chicago family. His father was a millionaire watch manufacturer.
The Men: Nathan Leopold (19) and Richard Loeb (18) were brilliant, affluent university students from elite families. They committed the crime simply because they believed they were intellectual "supermen" who could pull off the perfect, untraceable crime.
The Ransom Note
Leopold and Loeb typed a highly sophisticated, cold-blooded ransom note ahead of time and mailed it to the boy's father immediately after the abduction.
The Demands: The note demanded $10,000 in old, unmarked bills.
The Language: It addressed the father as "Dear Sir" and outlined complex instructions for a money drop from a moving train, warning him: "The money must be used. Any attempt at games will result in the immediate death of your son."
The Flaw: By the time the father received the note, a worker had already discovered Bobby's body in a culvert.
