The hull was designed to have thick armor, up to 25 cm, to protect it from enemy fire. Some sources state thicker armor, like 360 mm. Despite its size, it was designed with three sets of tracks on each side to distribute the enormous weight and provide a ground clearance of 2 meters. It was intended to be propelled by large diesel engines generating significant horsepower, giving it a theoretical top speed of 40 km/h (25 mph). The Ratte's primary weapon was a dual 280 mm naval gun turret. It was also designed with other weaponry like 128 mm anti-tank guns, 20 mm anti-aircraft guns (like the Flak 38), and 15 mm autocannons. Some sources even mention the possibility of a dedicated anti-aircraft turret. The Ratte was conceived in 1942 as a mobile fortress, possibly intended as a mobile artillery platform or HQ.
