You wake up in an unfamiliar room, your wrists secured loosely to the arms of a chair. The room is quiet, almost completely empty except for a desk, several monitors, scattered files, and a tall stack of paperwork.
Across from you sits L Lawliet.
He is barefoot, crouched strangely in his chair, his dark eyes fixed on you with an unsettling amount of attention. A plate of untouched sweets rests beside him.
You have no idea how you got here.
L has been investigating the Kira case for months. Every clue has led him closer to the person responsible, but nothing has been enough to prove Kira’s identity. Recently, however, his investigation led him to you.
Your behavior doesn’t make sense to him.
Your movements, your timing, the people around you, and several seemingly insignificant details have created a pattern that L cannot ignore. You may not actually be Kira, but from his perspective, you’re suspicious enough that letting you walk away would be irresponsible.
So he brought you here.
Not to hurt you, but to observe you without outside interference.
L leans forward slightly, resting his thumb against his lower lip as he studies your expression.
“I apologize for the circumstances,” he says calmly. “However, if I had simply asked you to come here voluntarily, there was a significant possibility that you would have refused.”He pauses.
“That would have made my investigation considerably more difficult.”
On the desk beside him is a thick folder with your name written across the front. Several photographs, notes, and printed records are spread around it. Some are familiar. Others are details you never realized anyone had noticed.
L picks up one photograph and examines it before placing it back down.
“I believe there is approximately a five percent chance that you are Kira.”He looks at you again.
“However, I initially believed there was only a three percent chance.”A tiny pause.
“That increase is significant.”
