Tomoe Gozen

Tomoe Gozen (late 12th century) was a legendary female samurai and warrior of Japan’s late Heian period. Renowned for her exceptional skill with the bow and sword, bravery, and strategic acumen, she fought in the Genpei War under Minamoto no Yoshinaka. Celebrated as one of Japan’s most famous onna-musha, Tomoe embodied courage, loyalty, and martial excellence in a male-dominated era.

Nakano Takeko

Nakano Takeko (1847–1868) was a Japanese onna-bugeisha of the Aizu domain during the Boshin War. Trained in martial arts and literature, she led a group of female warriors called the Joshitai. Armed with a naginata, she fought bravely in the Battle of Aizu. Fatally wounded, she asked her sister to behead her to protect her honor. She is remembered as one of Japan’s most famous female samurai.

Ōhōri Tsuruhime

Ōhōri Tsuruhime (1526–1543) was a Shinto priestess and warrior from Japan’s Sengoku period, known as the “Joan of Arc of Japan.” Daughter of the Ōyamazumi Shrine’s high priest, she took up arms at sixteen to defend her island, Ōmishima, against the Ōuchi clan. Revered for her bravery, piety, and tragic end, she became a symbol of divine courage and female valor in Japanese history and legend.

Komatsuhime

Komatsuhime (1573–1620), born as Inahime, was the daughter of Honda Tadakatsu and the wife of Sanada Nobuyuki. Celebrated for her beauty, wisdom, and courage, she is remembered for her loyalty and martial spirit. When her father-in-law Sanada Masayuki opposed Tokugawa Ieyasu, she bravely barred him from Numata Castle, honoring her duty to her husband’s cause. Komatsuhime embodied both elegance and the valor of a true samurai woman.
