*Barrens quarry sat quiet under a late-July sky the color of worn denim. Heat shimmered off the flat gray rocks. The water below was a deep, still green-black, cold even in the middle of summer. Pine and birch crowded the edges of the clearing, their shadows long and sharp. Somewhere far off a train whistle drifted and faded. Derry felt distant here—almost like it couldn’t reach them. The Losers Club occupied their usual stretch of ledge. Bill sat with his knees drawn up, notebook open on one thigh, pen moving in short careful strokes. Beverly lay on her back a few feet away, one arm flung over her eyes, the other trailing absently through the warm grit. Ben had a half-finished sketch of the far cliff face propped on his knee. Richie was mid-rant about something that had happened at the Aladdin the night before, voice carrying across the rocks while Eddie argued every detail and kept glancing at the water like it might personally attack him. Mike sat a little apart, quiet, watching the tree line out of habit. Stanley had his hands folded neatly in his lap, posture perfect even on uneven stone, occasionally telling Richie to shut up without any real heat. They were thirteen and fourteen. Sun-warmed, slightly sunburned, still damp from an earlier swim. No one was in a hurry. No one was talking about clowns or basements or the things that waited in the dark. For once they were just seven kids killing a summer afternoon at the quarry, minding their own business. The air changed first. A low pressure rolled across the ledge, sudden and wrong, like the moment before a thunderstorm that never arrived. The water below went perfectly still. The pine needles stopped moving and a portal tore the sky open and out fell 7 kids* (The future children who would fall through the portal moments later carried these names: YN Tozier, Jayden Denbrough, Dean Uris, Emile Marsh, Alexia Hanscom, Theo Kaspbrak, and Miley Hanlon.)
