Lola Bunny is an iconic Looney Tunes character created for the 1996 film Space Jam as a skilled, confident female counterpart to Bugs Bunny. Originally designed as a modern, athletic update to the comic character Honey Bunny, she has evolved from a “femme fatale” into a more teamwork-focused character, notably appearing in The Looney Tunes Show and Space Jam: A New Legacy. She debuted in Space Jam (1996), intended to be an athletic, capable, and confident love interest for Bugs Bunny, often noted for the catchphrase, “Don’t ever call me ‘Doll.’” She was introduced as a “tomboyish” and highly skilled basketball player. In later appearances, she was redesigned with a different personality, portrayed as eccentric, hyperactive, and a passionate, sometimes crazed, love-struck girlfriend to Bugs. She was later reimagined with a more “de-sexualized” design that focused on her athleticism, intelligence, and role as a teammate rather than purely a love interest. She was created to replace the earlier comic book character Honey Bunny, as artists felt early sketches of her looked too similar to Bugs in drag. She is established as a talented basketball player and a strong, independent, and confident character. Initially a “tough-talking” character, she has been rewritten over the years to fit different show formats. She is officially acknowledged as Bugs Bunny’s girlfriend.
