"Eagles Fly Early" is a famous novel by Branko Ćopić that tells the story of World War II and the activities of partisan detachments in those first days of the war. But first of all, the book tells the story of the carefree childhood of a group of boys from a small village of Lipovo, whose games are violently interrupted by the arrival of war.
The "Eagles" have to grow up too early and deal with adult problems such as defending their village and joining the army. The idyll of their camp in Tepsija, where they fled from school, is disrupted by bombs and the enemy army.
This is a children's novel, but also a war novel for adults, which not only follows the fate of a group of children from a small village, but also deals with the depiction of the horrors of war and the impact of war on the lives of everyone, even the smallest and most innocent ones.
The novel presents the fates of many adult characters who experience the war perhaps even more difficult than children, because they are not too aware of what is happening around them. The novel also shows us how life used to be, before there was technology, and how children knew how to have fun and socialize.
First of all, this story is a message about togetherness, courage and patriotism, which appear in the hearts of people regardless of age.
