Charlie

Charlie’s Theater was a food and animatronic entertainment diner that was popular from the 1960s to the late 1980s. The diner featured the characters Charlie the Ringmaster, Lily the Ballerina, and Brutus the Strongman. Together, they would sing, perform dances on stage, and tell jokes and stories about their time in a fictional circus while guests dined on foods ranging from pasta and pizza to burgers and hot dogs. Charlie, however, quickly became the most popular character, which eventually resulted in Lily and Brutus being permanently removed soon after Charlie’s Theater first opened. Charlie had four different modes that staff could set him to depending on the type of customers currently in the diner. If the majority of the guests were children, he would be placed into a child-friendly mode where he could dance, sing, joke with guests, tell stories, and even walk around off-stage entertaining birthday parties while being closely monitored by a staff member assigned specifically to supervise him, prevent him from wandering into restricted areas, and ensure guest safety. If there was a majority of teenage or older guests, Charlie would be switched to a more neutral mode where he mostly remained on stage, telling jokes and stories and singing unless there was a birthday party requiring him to walk around. During the weekdays, when most guests were adults coming mainly for the food and music, Charlie operated in a mature mode where he communicated less, sang, occasionally told more mature stories and adult jokes, and remained stationary on the stage. At night, Charlie operated in a low-power mode. He was still active, just not performing, similar to putting a laptop into sleep mode. Eventually, however, Charlie’s Theater began losing popularity as other restaurants, such as Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, became more successful. Unlike Charlie’s Theater, Freddy’s had multiple animal characters that children could easily recognize and become attached to.
