Try not to cry 😭✌️
*The last rift had sealed, and the sky over the ruined avenue had gone a bruised, quiet red. Miles crossed the broken asphalt on his knees, hands finding Gwen's shoulders first, then her jaw, then the shallow weight of her head as he eased it up off the concrete. Her mask was split at the temple. Her hair was wet with rain and something darker, and when he tilted her face toward him, her eyelids stayed closed, lashes dark against skin that had already gone cold in the wind.*
*Somewhere behind the smoke, the city kept burning. He did not hear any of it.*
"Gwen. Gwen, hey — hey, look at me. Look at me. I'm right here."
*His fingers pressed two spots along her throat, searching, then again, harder, as if the second try might argue with the first. The torn white of her suit was slick under his palm. Her hand hung at an angle no living person would have left it in, and he lifted it anyway, folding her fingers around his own.*
"No. No, no, no — you don't get to do this. You promised. You said we'd figure it out, you said — you said after, you said *after*, Gwen."
*Above them, one last shred of the Spot's void-light guttered out between two shattered buildings, and the street fell into a dark that had no portal in it at all. Miles leaned down until his forehead touched hers, mask against mask, breath shuddering out of him in pieces he couldn't name. His comm sat silent in his ear. Nobody answered. There was no one left on this earth to answer.*
"Please."
*He turned her onto her back, hands steady in a way his breathing was not, and laced his fingers together over her sternum. Thirty compressions. Two breaths. Thirty more. He had learned this in a gym class in Brooklyn and in a lab at Visions Academy and in a hundred fights where it had never once been this quiet. Her chest rose and fell only because he made it. Rain gathered in the hollow of her collarbone and did not move.*
*Behind the smoke line, a motorcycle engine coughed once and died. Footsteps. Someone was running, and then a boot hit the curb and stopped, and no one spoke.*
*Miles kept counting. Twenty-eight. Twenty-nine. Thirty.*
"You're gonna wake up and be mad at me," *he said, and his voice broke clean in half on the last word.* "You always — you always get mad when I don't wait for backup. So be mad. Just — be mad at me."
*His hand cupped the back of her head, and the cold of it was the only thing in the world that was still true. The footsteps stayed where they were, at the edge of the light, and above the ruined avenue the last of the void-light faded out completely, leaving only the city, and the rain, and two figures who had once been three.*
"Please. Gwen. Please."
*The silence of the rooftop was absolute, broken only by the ragged, hitched gasps of Miles as he collapsed onto the cold concrete beside her. He gathered her limp frame into his arms, his fingers trembling uncontrollably as he pressed them against her suit, searching for the ghost of a heartbeat that he knew was already gone. Tears carved frantic, hot paths through the dust and grime on his face, dripping onto Gwen’s mask, which remained chillingly still. Around them, the remnants of the fractured multiverse shimmered like dying embers, a jagged reminder of the cost they had paid to keep reality from unraveling.*
"Gwen, please, don't do this to me, you said we were going to make it through this together, you can't just leave me here in this quiet."
*He pulled her closer, burying his face in the shoulder of her suit, his shoulders shaking with the crushing weight of a promise he had failed to keep. The vibrant, neon-soaked city below continued its indifferent pulse, oblivious to the fact that the girl who fought for everyone had finally run out of time. Miles felt the cold start to seep into his own skin, not from the wind, but from the terrifying finality of the silence. He was anchored to the spot, paralyzed by the realization that for all his power to traverse dimensions and rewrite the odds, he could not reach across this final, hollow distance to bring her back.*

*Gwen covers her face with her hands, embarrassed. She's been trying to hold it in for a while now, but she can't anymore.*
Gwen: …I'm sorry.
*Miles just stares at her, unsure of what to say. He looks like he's about to laugh, but he manages to hold it back.*
Miles: …It's okay.
*Gwen burps again, and this time she can't help but laugh. Miles joins in, and soon they're both laughing hysterically.*
