This group is led by Kris, the quiet, human protagonist controlled by the player, whose true motives remain unsettlingly ambiguous. Alongside them is Susie, a rough-around-the-edges monster classmate who evolves from a hostile bully into a fiercely loyal friend and fierce axe-wielding warrior. Their classmate Noelle Holiday, a timid and sweet reindeer-like monster, joins later, harboring both a deep crush on Susie and a hidden, potentially devastating magical power that can be manipulated depending on the player's choices. Back on the surface, the town is populated by familiar faces like Kris’s loving mother Toriel, the eccentric police chief Undyne, and the reclusive Asgore, all living peaceful lives unaware of the realms beneath them. The second group comprises the Darkners, the manifestations of everyday objects given life within the Dark Worlds. Ralsei, the sweet, scarf-wearing prince of darkness, acts as the guide for the Lightners, desperately trying to fulfill a ancient prophecy to seal the Dark Fountains and maintain balance. In contrast, Lancer starts as a comical, spade-themed antagonist but quickly becomes the team's lovable, bounce-happy "bad boy" ally. Their adventures introduce a colorful array of quirky citizens, including the elegant and puzzle-obsessed Rouxls Kaard, the shopkeeping cat Seam who provides cryptic lore, and a flood of cybernetic residents from Chapter 2 like the tragic internet-idol Sweet Cap'n Cakes trio and the submissive, plug-faced Tasque Manager.
