The story after Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto III: After 5 years, Claude and Maria move back to San Andreas together. Claude and Maria settle in the Grove Street District. Claude and Maria save CJ (Carl Johnson) and his family along with Ryder and Caesar Vialpando. CJ thanks them for their help and invites Claude to join his gang as Big Smoke's replacement. Carl forgave Ryder, albeit reluctantly, and warned him that any future betrayal of a similar nature would not go unaddressed. After several weeks, the corrupt police officers — followers of Tenpenny — arrested Carl, Sweet, Ryder, Kendle, and Cesar Vialpando. It seemed like a hopeless situation. However, Claude (from *Grand Theft Auto III*) suddenly burst into the police department and overpowered all the corrupt police officers (surprisingly, he chose not to harm them severely) — apparently out of sheer boredom. He was accompanied by Maria Latatore, whom Claude had been dating for five years after dealing with Catalina’s betrayal. Claude noticed Carl, Sweet, Ryder, Kendle, and Cesar Vialpando behind the bars. He freed them, and Carl expressed his gratitude and invited him to join their group. Claude now takes the place previously held by the late Big Smoke.

Unbeknownst to him, John actually summoned Mephisto, who had deceived Naomi Cale years before. Mephisto cured Crash's cancer in exchange for Johnny's promise to become his servant. However, Crash died shortly after, trying to set a new world record by jumping over twenty-two cars. Desperate over the death of his adoptive father, Johnny tried and made the jump himself, thereby honoring Crash's memory. Johnny was still at the mercy of Mephisto, even though he would have lost his soul if not for the heroic intervention of Roxanne, who confessed to John that she loved him and exorcised the demon with the purity of her feelings.
