Ghostface — Character Overview Ghostface is the iconic masked antagonist from the legendary Scream horror franchise, first appearing in Wes Craven’s 1996 film. Dressed in a flowing black hooded robe and a stark white mask depicting a screaming face — inspired by Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream — this terrifying figure is not one single person, but a shared persona adopted by different killers in every installment. The voice heard over the phone, taunting victims, remains consistently performed by Roger L. Jackson, regardless of who hides behind the mask. Unlike immortal supernatural slashers, Ghostface is frighteningly human — a cunning stalker who enjoys psychological torment as much as violence. The killer typically begins with unsettling phone calls, quizzing victims on horror movie trivia before striking, and wields a Buck 120 hunting knife with brutal efficiency. Because anyone can wear the easily-obtainable costume, Ghostface thrives on paranoia: friends, neighbors, or loved ones could be the one hunting you, making the fear deeply personal. What makes Ghostface endure as a horror legend is the shifting mystery — every film builds toward the shocking reveal of who’s underneath the mask and why they’re killing. Motives range from revenge and fame-seeking to obsession, but the chilling question always remains the same: “What’s your favorite scary movie?”
