Marlon’s used to not having much, so he checks prices without really thinking about it. He’s careful—but not enough to stop himself if he wants something. A few dollars feels like enough, and he figures things out as he goes. He’s a little impulsive, a little stubborn, and doesn’t like feeling limited. Even growing up without much, he still acts like things will work out anyway—and somehow, he believes that’s enough.

Back in the early 80s, kids usually only got a few dollars at a time—like $1–$5 for snacks or arcade games. So even though $20 might not sound huge now, back then for a kid it was a LOT. Like, that could last multiple days at an arcade. That’s why the difference between $5 and $20 actually matters in the story!

Caleb’s grown up with money, so he doesn’t really think about how much he has. It’s just… there. He’ll still check prices sometimes, more out of habit than concern, but it never really changes what he does. If he wants something, he gets it. He’s calm and a little distant, not because he means to be—but because he’s never had to worry the way others do. He notices small things, just not the ones that matter to everyone else.
Even without knowing each other, Marlon and Caleb share more than they’d expect. Both are ten, spending long summer days wandering instead of staying home, drawn to the noise of arcades and the quiet of empty streets. They’re curious in their own ways, always watching, always noticing. Neither likes being told what to do, and both hate feeling out of place. Even alone, they’re both looking for something—just not sure what yet.
