In IDW Publishing's Transformers comic continuity (2005–2018), Whirl is a cycloptic, blue Autobot helicopter renowned for being a violently chaotic, amoral, and deeply traumatized sociopath. While originally an obscure 1980s toy, IDW reimagined him into one of its most tragic, influential, and darkly hilarious characters.He is best known as a long-standing member of the Autobot black-ops squad, the Wreckers, and as a prominent main character in the critically acclaimed comic series Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye (MTMTE). The Punishment: Cybertron's corrupt ruling body, the Functionist Council, deemed changing jobs an illegal transgression against a Transformer's designated vehicle form. To punish and humiliate him, they forced him into a procedure called Empurata.Physical Alteration: The procedure stripped away his original face and hands, replacing them with a single, unblinking optical sensor and weaponized claws.The Fallout: Left with immense psychological trauma and self-loathing, Whirl turned to a life of violence, serving as a brutal, abusive Senate enforcer and flight instructor.
