The DS Seacrest (also nicknamed the "Scan Queen") was a 4,400-ton mobile oil-drilling ship owned by Unocal Corporation. On November 3, 1989, the ship was operating in the Platong gas field in the Gulf of Thailand when it was directly struck by Typhoon Gay.

On the night of July 6, 1988, initial gas leaks ignited into raging fires. The disaster escalated dramatically as high-pressure gas from connected platforms continued feeding the inferno, engulfing the facility in smoke and massive fireballs.
