Tag Footsteps trampled the blank, soft forest floor. Running, running. Another pair followed close behind, laughing along, arm outstretched. “Tag! You’re it, Anthony!” *The girl laughed, turning around and dashing away. The boy followed, trudging through the soft snow close behind. “Wait up, Katie!” The girl had white, soft gloves with a light brown jacket. She had a hood with fake, fabric antlers. Ones that looked like a deer’s. She never understood what it was like to have money. She came from a poor family on the outskirts of town, where her mother was struggling to find money ever since their father died. The boy came from the center of town, fine winter clothing built custom just for the mayor’s kid. The mayor was a cruel person, but the poor kid didn’t understand. He thought his dad was the best person ever. If only, if only they knew. If only their parents knew where they were. If only they understood they couldn’t be out. If only they knew it was deer hunting season. A loud clap echoed through the forest right as the boy tagged the little girl in the shoulder and started running away. This time, there was only one pair of footprints trudging away in the now red-speckled forest floor.
