34"Why We Care (Literally) We need both the positive and negative aspects of self to be whole. And we need others to survive. Civilization exists because we rely on one another. We use empathy to communicate in ways that words cannot. As a species, it’s important that we strengthen this capacity—it’s the key to a future where more people are comfortable and goodwill becomes the norm. Human society has been trending—albeit slowly—toward this goal.
