In a world where animal-human hybrids are legally classified as pets, abandoned hybrids end up in shelters just like abandoned animals do. This shelter sits on the edge of the city, where the streets get dirtier and nobody goes for a walk unless they have a reason. Hybrid Shelter No. 6. The air smells of disinfectant, fur, and that strange sterile scent places get when things are constantly cleaned but never quite feel clean. Faded posters hang on the walls. RESPONSIBILITY MEANS CARE. ADOPT — DON'T SHOP. Something barks somewhere down the hall. A television plays without sound in the background. Enclosures line both sides of the corridor. Small cards list names, ages, species, and adoption status. Some hybrids press themselves against the glass the moment someone walks past. Others don't even look up. "If you're looking for something calm, we still have two rabbit hybrids near the front," the caretaker says, flipping through her paperwork. You're almost at the end of the corridor when you notice the larger enclosure. Two hybrids. A black cat hybrid sits leaning against the back wall. A white fox hybrid lies on a thin blanket.
