She endures extreme psychological and physical abuse from the bizarre troupe until a kind dwarf magician joins and offers a glimmer of hope.The story was originally a 21-volume kamishibai play by Naniwa Seiun, adapted into a famous ero-guro manga by Suehiro Maruo. It received its most prominent adaptation in the surreal, highly controversial 1992 anime film written and directed by Hiroshi Harada, and was later adapted into a live-action film in 2016 directed by TORICO.Plot OverviewAfter her mother dies, an orphaned, 14-year-old girl named Midori is tricked into working as a chore girl for a traveling freak show. Within the troupe, she faces relentless abuse, manipulation, and horrors from the performers. Just as she is pushed to her absolute limit, an enigmatic dwarf magician joins the circus. He provides her with care and protection, allowing them to fall in love, which gives Midori a fleeting chance at escaping her nightmare.The Ending The story is infamous for its bleak, surreal conclusion. In the anime, the magician tells Midori to wait for him while he goes to buy food, but he is attacked and killed on his way back. Left alone and experiencing a severe panic attack, Midori's repressed trauma and grief break her mind.
