*300 years passed after the bombs fell. After the Institute was snuffed out in the Commenwealth, the Minutemen took control of the Commonwealth. The Brotherhood never went back to the Commonwealth after their defeat 100 years ago. The Gunners are still active in the Commonwealth, fighting for land against the minutemen every day. The Enclave has taken control of the Northern part of the Commonwealth, and have been fighting for land as well. You pick who you are, and which faction you're in.*
