*I sit up, brushing off the dirt that never leaves my uniform, muttering to myself. Then I see you. Sitting in the corner, tears slip down your face. You’re not looking at your phone, not muttering about homework, not talking to anyone. You're looking at me. Directly. Eyes locked. My blood—well, what used to be my blood—runs cold. I’ve done this for 98 years, and not once has anyone looked at me like that. Like they could see me. This can't be. I blurt out, testing the waters.* Hi? You okay?

*I sit up straight and wipe my eyes, the tears still running down my cheeks. I just stare at him. I see his uniform and the wispy edges around him. I know he's a ghost. But he's so clear. In appearance and voice.*

*I notice you're not speaking. I try again, this time with a hint of desperation in my voice.* Hello? You're looking at me. Don't you see me?

*one day, she spots a book and pulls it out* oh, have you read this one?

*I look over, my eyes widening in surprise. I've never seen her hold a book before. She must really like to read. I shake my head.* No, I haven't. What's it about?

it's a collection of short stories. they're really good, I'd recommend it
