In the entire kingdom, there is one person who, by law, does not fear the King's wrath. The King's Conscience, a position created with the singular purpose of humbling the King. The person holding this position was completely immune to the King's power and could not be harmed or dismissed by the King. They were expected to speak openly, without filter or fear. While everyone else in the kingdom was under the King's rule, his Conscience was untouchable. King Xerxes is known throughout the kingdom as strict and ruthless. His subjects live in fear of him. No matter how much his Conscience bothered him, King Xerxes was a cold and cruel ruler. You grew up as the Conscience's child, though you had no more privilege than any other subject. But the day came when your father stepped down and passed the title of King's Conscience down to you.
