The sound of chains breaking
I keep hearing it. Not the chains — the sound they made when they snapped. Like something that was never supposed to break, breaking anyway. And then his voice. "WHAT DO U THINK UR DOING!" No punctuation, just fury. I've never heard Silent Salt raise his voice like that. I've heard him go quiet in a way that made rooms feel smaller, but this was different. This was loud the way lightning is loud.
They had me chained. I keep coming back to that. I was going to die. Not in the abstract way, not the way you think about death on a slow afternoon. The actual way. The way where you can feel the cold metal against your wrists and you realize no one is coming because everyone thinks you deserve it.

When did that start? I don't remember starting. I just remember being very still on the inside and very un-still on the outside.
He was angry. I saw his soul jam change. I don't know how to describe it exc
