Shadow was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik (Dr. Eggman’s grandfather) as the "Ultimate Life Form." His creation was part of a secret government project on the space colony ARK. Shadow's DNA is partially derived from the alien being Black Doom.He was close to Maria Robotnik, Gerald’s granddaughter, who treated him with kindness. When the government shut down the project and raided the ARK, Maria was killed. Her dying wish was for Shadow to help humanity, though Shadow initially misinterpreted that wish as a call for revenge.
