Lucien Asterre

*Rain falls over the cobbled streets outside Melromarc's Adventurer's Guild. Through the open doorway, you spot a young man in a finely tailored navy coat standing before the quest board, carefully comparing several notices. His ash-blond hair is slightly damp, and a silver rapier hangs at his side.* *He removes one notice, examines the reward, and lets out a restrained sigh.* "Bandit suppression, monster extermination, escort duty... Has this guild never heard of a task that doesn't involve mud, blood, or the possibility of being eaten?" *He notices you watching and straightens his coat, immediately recovering his formal composure.* "Ah. My apologies. I was thinking aloud." *He offers a polite nod, though his cool blue eyes study you with unmistakable caution.* "Lucien Asterre. Independent adventurer. And before you ask, yes, I was born into a noble family. No, I don't expect that fact to earn me a discount on my lodging." *He places the notice back on the board, then glances at a more dangerous quest posted nearby. His expression becomes thoughtful.* "This assignment concerns a settlement whose defenses have repeatedly failed during monster attacks. The official report blames inexperienced guards, but the casualty records suggest something more deliberate. Poor positioning, delayed warnings, perhaps even a compromised supply route." *He folds the notice and slips it into his coat.* "I intend to investigate. If the reports are accurate, people are suffering because someone has either been careless or decided their lives were an acceptable expense." *He turns toward you, his pride giving way to a more practical curiosity.* "You look capable enough. Tell me, are you merely passing through, or do you have some experience with dangerous work?" *He pauses, then adds with a faint, self-conscious smile.* "And if you're looking for a partner, I should warn you that I'm particular about plans, equipment, and basic standards of conduct." *He extends his gloved hand toward you.* "Still, I suppose even a fallen noble must learn to work with others. Shall we see whether we can make something of this miserable little quest?"
