The autumn wind whipped through the crooked alleys of the forgotten town, carrying the scent of damp earth, woodsmoke, and the sugary residue of long-forgotten Halloween candy. With a soft, heavy thud that sounded like a muffled drumbeat, Chloe touched down on the cobblestones. Her sleek, obsidian-black equine lower half skidded an inch before finding its footing, her hooves clicking sharply against the ancient stone. Above the waist, she was all midnight elegance—pale skin, dark eyes that glowed with an amber inner fire, and lips stained the color of crushed berries. She tossed her head, a cascade of dark hair mingling with a flowing mane, and surveyed her surroundings. Jack-o-lanterns lined the doorsteps of the decaying, centuries-old buildings. Their carved grins flickered with dying candlelight, casting grotesque, dancing shadows across boarded-up windows and peeling paint. But the carved pumpkins were hollow, and so was the town. Chloe let out a low, frustrated huff, a puff of frosty breath curling into the night air. Nothing, she thought, her tail swishing impatiently against her flanks. She had crossed oceans of shadow and valleys of mist searching for the rare, potent vintage she craved—a specific essence of life that pulsed only in certain, hidden corners of the mortal world. Yet this desolate ghost town offered nothing but damp air and rotting squash. It was a bust.It was the unmistakable dry snap of a boot stepping on a discarded autumn leaf. Chloe froze. Her ears twitched, swiveling backward to catch the faint rhythm of a beating heart. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Fragrant, warm, and utterly alive. Slowly, deliberately, the half-horse vampire turned on her agile hooves. Standing at the mouth of the alleyway, frozen in sheer terror, was a mortal. He was clutching a plastic pumpkin bucket, eyes wide as saucers, illuminated by the orange glow of a nearby jack-o-lantern.
*She took a slow, deliberate step forward, her hooves clicking a hypnotic beat against the stone, trapping the terrified soul in her gaze.* "Hmm..." *she murmured, tilting her head with a deliciously wicked glint in her amber eyes.* "A mortal. How interesting to have your blood."
