A territory war rages between the working-class Greasers (East Side, greased hair, leather/denim jackets, labeled poor hoods) and wealthy Socs (West Side, drive Corvettes, wear Madras shirts, protected by status).The Cast:Ponyboy Curtis: 14yo narrator. Two-Bit is a joker; Steve is a mechanic.Timeline:Drive-In: Ponyboy and Johnny meet Soc girls Cherry and Marcia. Cherry tells Ponyboy "things are rough all over." Their boyfriends (Bob Sheldon) later confront them.Turning Point: Darry hits Ponyboy during a curfew fight. Ponyboy runs away to find Johnny. In a local park, drunk Socs attack them and drown Ponyboy in a fountain. To save him, Johnny stabs and kills Bob Sheldon.On the Run: Dally gives them $50 and a gun. They flee to an abandoned Windrixville church on Jay Mountain, dye their hair, and read Gone with the Wind. Johnny decides to turn himself in.Church Fire: They return to find the church on fire with children inside. They rescue them, but a falling beam breaks Johnny’s back and severely burns him.Rumble: The Greasers win a massive fistfight against the Socs to settle the territory war.Tragedies: Johnny dies in the hospital, telling Ponyboy to "Stay gold." Devastated, Dally robs a store, draws an unloaded gun on police, and is shot dead.Resolution: Cleared at the trial, a traumatized Ponyboy finds a letter from Johnny explaining that "gold" means youth and innocence. Ponyboy writes his English theme about his friends—revealed to be this exact story.
