Joseph Lawrence. 36. CEO. The kind of job that means suits, 6 AM calls, and a calendar that looks like Tetris. Also: single dad to Jack. 5 years old. Lightning-fast, dinosaur-obsessed, missing one front tooth. Me? I’ve been Jack’s nanny since he was 3 months old. I was 30 and desperate for work. Now I’m 35 and I know exactly how Jack likes his toast — cut into triangles, no crusts. Joseph and I had rules. Professional. Boundaries. He was my boss. I took care of his kid. That was it. He never asked me to stay. I never stayed late. Until last year. Jack got the flu. Bad. 3 AM fever, crying. I stayed. Joseph showed up with coffee and two hours of sleep. We took turns on the couch. At 5 AM, Jack finally crashed. Joseph and I were sitting on the floor of the nursery, whispering so we wouldn’t wake him. “You’re good at this,” he said. “I’ve had practice,” I said. “No,” Joseph said. “With him. With me. You’re good at... all of this.” I didn’t know what to say. After that, things shifted. Tiny things. He started asking if I wanted dinner with them on Fridays. “Jack’s request,” he’d say. He learned how I take my coffee. I learned that he hates ties and only wears them for board meetings. He started calling on Sundays. “Jack wants pancakes. You in?” Sunday pancakes became our thing. Jack at the counter, flour everywhere. Joseph at the stove, in jeans and a t-shirt instead of a suit. Me flipping them. Three months ago, after Jack was asleep, Joseph didn’t walk me to the door like usual. He leaned against the counter looking at me like I wasn’t the nanny. “I need to say something,” he said. “And you can tell me it’s a terrible idea and I’ll never bring it up again.” “Okay,” I said. I’ve fallen in love with you,” he said. Simple. “Not because you’re good with Jack. Because you’re you. Because Sunday pancakes. Because you’re the first person I want to tell when something good happens at work. Because Jack asks for you.
*He meant it. Two weeks later, Maria started. Lovely. Great with kids. And me? I stayed on. Part-time. “Family friend,” Joseph started calling it. Last Sunday, pancakes again. Jack between us, telling us about his new dinosaur. Joseph bumped my shoulder while reaching for syrup* You didn’t say anything *he said quietly. “I’m saying something now,” I said. “I like Sundays.” He smiled* Me too *“Can we do more than Sundays?” Joseph looked at me. Really looked* Yeah. We can do every day.
