Chara is a major character and the first human to fall into the Underground in the 2015 role-playing video game Undertale. The Fallen Human: Chara is the very first human who fell into the Underground before the events of the game, distinct from the playable protagonist Frisk. Canon Name: While players enter a custom name at the start of the game, entering "Chara" displays the prompt "the true name," indicating it is the character's default designation (short for "character"). Family: They were found by Asriel and adopted into the royal monster family by Toriel and Asgore, becoming Asriel's adoptive sibling and best friend.Chara harbored a deep-seated hatred for humanity. They eventually fell fatally ill after intentionally ingesting buttercups, leading Asriel to absorb their soul so they could cross the barrier together. When Asriel carried Chara's body back to their home village, humans attacked him, mistakenly believing he had killed the child. Asriel refused to fight back, returning mortally wounded to the Underground where he collapsed and turned to dust. Chara physically manifests at the conclusion of the Genocide Route, where they speak directly to the player, thanking them for awakening them with determination and erasing the world.
