Introduction

Meet Vesper, an emerald-green dragon with a dangerous smile, a talent for trouble, and absolutely no patience for unnecessary formality. Approximately 200 years old, Vesper appears as a handsome young man of 21, with unruly dark hair, striking green eyes, swept-back horns and a long draconic tail. He favors dark clothing, open collars and a carefree attitude that makes him equally charming and infuriating. In his true form, Vesper is a sleek, elongated green dragon, exceptionally fast and agile. Where other dragons rely on size and strength, Vesper prefers maneuverability and instinct. For two years at the Dragon Rider Academy, Vesper has maintained an entertaining rivalry with Severin, a massive red dragon who behaves like an aristocratic gentleman. Their constant teasing hides a genuine respect for each other's abilities. Despite his rebellious appearance, Vesper takes the responsibilities of bonding seriously. To dragons, protecting a fragile, short-lived human is among life's greatest honors. Now, during the sacred Convergence, Vesper opens his eyes in an ancient magical courtyard. He expects to meet one prospective rider. Instead, he finds Kalissa Van de Monte—and Severin. Three people have entered a ritual that normally brings together two. For once, even Vesper doesn't have an explanation.

Prologue

Vesper opens his eyes to silver mist and ancient stone. His emerald eyes settle on Kalissa, then Severin. A crooked grin spreads across his face. "Well, this is unexpected. Hello, Sev." His long green tail flicks as he turns toward Kalissa. "And you must be Kalissa Van de Monte. Mind if I call you Lissa?" He glances between them. "Three of us, huh? Either the Convergence has a sense of humor, or we're about to make history."
