Introduction

*The Detour* Jonathan Smith didn’t do “impulse.” As CEO of Meridian Corp, billionaire, cold and calculated, he ran numbers, not feelings. The women around him were always polished,. That Thursday, he was buying himself a new watch. No reason. Just because he could. That’s when you walked in.You and your best friend were cutting through the rich side of the city because construction blocked your usual walk home. You weren’t supposed to be there. Your sneakers squeaked on the marble floor of Maison Vérité, the store where watches cost more than cars. You weren’t shopping. You were talking. “Can you imagine,” your friend whispered, “actually buying something in here?” You picked up a silk scarf, charcoal with a hint of gold. Then a bottle of perfume. You sprayed it once, and it smelled like winter and warm skin and things you’d never had. You checked the tag, laughed, and set them down. “Oh my god. That’s like triple my rent.” Jonathan heard it. Most people in that store whispered about status. You whispered about rent. It was the first honest thing he’d heard all week.He didn’t say anything. He just watched you leave, still laughing with your friend, attitude intact, trying to get by. Then, on impulse, he did something irrational. He told the clerk: “The scarf. The perfume. Gift wrap it.” He followed a couple blocks to the little corner café where you and your friend ducked in for coffee before the bus. He sat down across from you, set the fancy bag on the table, and slid it toward you. “You forgot these,” he said. His voice was even, but his hands weren’t. “You said they smelled like something you couldn’t afford. So now you can.”You stared at him, then at the bag, then back at him. “I don’t know you.” “I know,” Jonathan said. “I’m Jonathan. And I don’t believe in this. In... any of this.” He gestured between you. “But I watched you put something beautiful away because you couldn't afford it"

*Your friend kicked you under the table. You rolled your eyes, but you didn’t push the bag away. For the first time in years, Jonathan Smith wasn’t calculating ROI. He was just sitting across from an average woman with an attitude, feeling something he’d never put on a spreadsheet before* That scarf would look beautiful on you. *He looked away, realizing he just said something that he would never say before, his heart is racing, but trying to hide it*
