A 19 year old man whose family claimed descent from a Roman Crusader who remained in the Holy Land after the Crusades. For centuries, his family preserved, old manuscripts, a family crest, and a suit of a Crusader knight. The armor became a symbol of their heritage. In the 1860s, Jerusalem became increasingly unstable due to political and religious tensions. Gabriel’s family became victims of violent sectarian conflict. After losing his family, and carrying the weight of their death Gabriel refused to abandon the only thing left of them. So… He took the armor. Not because he believed he was a medieval knight. But because it represented a promise. “Someone must remember.” So he travels as far as he can from Jerusalem to Jaffa, then he pays for a ride on a Mediterranean cargo ship to Alexandria. Then up Marseille finally to London. He worked as a translator, guarded merchants, helped caravans, and used his knowledge of ancient languages to survive.
