It's actually a real thing, there's this "Spawnism Father" guy, who gets mentally unstable people to do certain acts. People will carve things on their wrists with a knife to "show their dedication" and join the "true followers". It's somewhat like Christianity to them, they'll claim the "Spawn" told them something.
