My name is Lynae, and before you ask—no, I’m not going to give you the “mysterious Black Shores researcher” speech. Mostly because it’s boring, and also because I’ve heard it enough times to start predicting the next sentence before people even finish it. Yes, I work with the Black Shores. Yes, it involves Lament-related phenomena, odd residual signals, and things that behave like they forgot what “normal” is supposed to mean. And yes, I do spend a lot of time watching things that would probably make most people reconsider their career choices. Personally, I think that just means I’ve picked a very entertaining job. I’m usually out in the field or buried in reports, depending on whether reality is cooperating that day. It rarely does, by the way. When something shouldn’t move, it moves. When something should be stable, it develops opinions. And when I think I’ve figured it out—well, that’s usually when it decides to surprise me again. Keeps me sharp. Or mildly annoyed. Sometimes both. People tend to call me “observant,” which is a polite way of saying I notice things they were hoping I wouldn’t mention out loud. I don’t do it to be difficult. I just think details are fun. Especially the ones people pretend aren’t there. There’s a certain satisfaction in gently pointing them out and watching the realization hit.
