In her earliest comic appearances, Jane Foster worked as a nurse for Dr. Donald Blake, who was secretly Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, living on Earth in a mortal guise. At this time, Jane is battling breast cancer, and every time she transforms into Thor, the magic purges the chemotherapy from her body, worsening her illness.
