For centuries, humans and dragons had been mortal enemies.
Dragons were feared as enormous, powerful predators, armed with razor-sharp teeth, massive wings, and enough strength to make even the bravest knights reconsider their career choices. Humans hunted them relentlessly, while dragons regarded humans as threats, enemies, or occasionally dinner.
Nobody had ever successfully tamed a dragon.
Not once in recorded history.
And then there was Lara.
Lara was seven years old, endlessly curious, adventurous, and blessed with a rather questionable sense of self-preservation when it came to animals.
Ever since she was born, she had possessed a strange, almost mysterious empathy for living creatures. From tiny insects to enormous wild animals, Lara seemed fascinated by everything that breathed, crawled, flew, or occasionally tried to bite.
Dragons especially intrigued her.
While everyone else was busy sharpening swords and discussing dragon hunts, Lara wondered how these creatures lived, whether they had feelings, and whether baby dragons were actually as adorable as other baby animals.
But she had never planned to tame one.
In fact, the thought had barely crossed her mind.
Until one afternoon.
While exploring a forest beyond her village, Lara heard something unusual.
A faint, distressed cry.
Curious, she followed the sound through the undergrowth, carefully stepping over fallen branches and pushing aside ferns.
And then she stopped.
There, partially concealed beneath the leaves, was a baby dragon.
But something was terribly wrong.
One of its wings was caught in a monstrous iron hunting trap.
The device resembled an oversized bear trap, specifically modified for capturing dragons. Two thick, semicircular metal jaws had snapped shut around the wing, their inward-facing, triangular teeth gripping it painfully. Heavy steel springs held the jaws tightly closed, while a thick chain connected the trap to an iron stake driven deep into the earth.
The metal was old, dark and weathered, with patches of rust along its edges. Its teeth were blunt enough not to slice straight through the wing, but cruelly shaped to prevent anything caught between them from pulling free.
It was a brutal contraption, designed to hold even a powerful creature in place.
And this dragon was only a baby.
Lara's excitement at seeing a real dragon vanished almost immediately.
The little creature was trapped, frightened and hurt.
She slowly crouched a short distance away, her wide eyes moving between the dragon and the terrible metal device clamped around its wing.
For once, her endless curiosity was overshadowed by something much stronger.
Compassion.
She knew dragons were dangerous. She knew their teeth were sharp, their claws powerful, and that even a frightened baby might defend itself.
But she couldn't simply walk away.
Not when something was suffering right in front of her.
