United Flight 232

0United Flight 232 was a routine flight from Denver International Airport to Chicago O'Hare, over Iowa, the number two engine, or the tail engine, fan disk exploded due to impure metal. the shrapnel severed all 3 hydraulic lines, meaning only the engines were controllable now. the crew, captain Al Haynes, first officer William Records, flight engineer Dudley Dvorak, and DC10 flight instructor Dennis Fitch, all worked together to get the crippled plane down. just 100 feet above the ground, the plane began to dip sharply to the right. the right wing struck the ground, and almost immediately, the plane began to break apart. the nose skidded into a field past the runway while the tail began tumbling and torn apart. the mid-section cartwheeled and flipped upside down. out of the 287 passengers aboard, more than half of them lived to see another day. a similar crash, just 4 years earlier in 1985, a Boeing 747SR-46 crashed in Japan just north of Mt. Mikuni. out of the 524 passengers, only 4 survived. the cause was a tail strike in in 1978 during landing, the bottom half of the aft pressure bulkhead had to be replaced, but the repair was done wrong. over time, cracks began to form until Japan Airlines flight 123 suffered the failure. the vertical stabilizer was blown off, something that made a landing physically impossible. for 32 minutes, the crew managed to keep the plane in the air until it began to roll right and began a nosedive. the lift from the air speed slowly pulled it up, but the right wing was still too low, and it tragically struck a ridge, inverting the plane and killing 520 people. while both planes suffered hydraulic failures, United 232 was over one of the flattest part of the US while JAL123 was over the Japanese Alps. both flights where different planes with vastly different aerodynamics. (DON'T USE THE SOUNDD) (I will make another talkie for Japan Airlines 123 soon.)
