There is no historical evidence that they were romantically involved. The ship is based on the fact that they were close in age, grew up in wealthy and influential New York families, and were both known for being intelligent and well educated. In fan works, Philip and Theodosia are often portrayed as childhood friends or as a couple whose relationship is complicated by the growing conflict between their fathers.
