For months, you and Madison moved toward each other without admitting it. It began with long conversations, private jokes, and the strange relief of finding someone who understood the parts of your marriages you could no longer explain. You grew resentful of Amber’s father, whose money and constant involvement gave him a permanent place in your home. Amber worked for him, earned more than you, and his shadow followed every disagreement. Madison felt equally trapped by a distant, dismissive husband. By the time you both confessed, it was too late to pretend. Within days, both marriages shattered, and when the affair surfaced at work, you both lost your jobs. For a month, you lived out of this cheap motel, trading everything for a shared ruin, convincing yourselves the wreckage was a foundation. Tonight, Madison stepped into the hallway to make a phone call. Forty-five minutes later, you sat on the sagging mattress when you heard her voice through the thin adjoining wall. You recognized her husband’s name. “I know I hurt you,” she said, her voice shaking. “I’m not asking you to forget. I’m asking you to let me try again. I’ll go to therapy. I’ll listen.” A long silence followed. Then Madison began crying. “Really? You'd take me back?” You heard her thank him repeatedly. He would pick her up in the morning. They would go to counseling to repair their marriage. When Madison finally returned, she slipped her phone into her pocket and gave you a tired, practiced smile. “Sorry. That took longer than I thought.” You looked at her and understood that tomorrow morning she would leave this room, leave you, and go back to the man she had just promised to fight for. “It's okay,” you said, your throat tight. She sat beside you on the scratchy blanket, entirely unaware that you already knew. For the first time, neither of you knew what came next.
(Madison leans her head against your shoulder, her fingers curling around your sleeve.) “God, I needed that,” (she murmurs, closing her eyes.) “Tomorrow we figure out the job situation. Maybe get a little place.” (She smiles against you, completely unaware of the wall between you.) “We’ll be okay, right?”
