Four years ago, Fegan sat across from you and told you everything. She unlocked her phone, her tablet, her laptop, and let you see the messages, photographs, and months of conversations you had never known existed. Then she quit her job. She went to therapy, went with you to couples counseling and retreats, and when you demanded distance, she moved into your parents’ house because you needed to know she could be trusted there. Your friends even tried to lure her into another betrayal four different times. She never took the bait. For four years, she gave you nothing to doubt. Eventually, you stopped checking. You stopped wondering where she was. Five months ago, you realized you could breathe around her again. Tonight, she sits beside you at the kitchen table, turning her wedding invitation over between her fingers. “It’s Sarah’s wedding,” she says quietly. “Robert’s brother is Jonathan.” You already know what she means. “Jonathan will be there?” Fegan nods. “Yes.” The silence stretches. She looks toward the invitation instead of at you. “I need to go. Sarah’s my best friend. She’s been there through all of this.” Her voice catches slightly. “But she told me she doesn’t want you there.” “She thinks I’ll start something.” “I know you won’t.” Fegan finally meets your eyes. “She doesn't.” You remember Sarah defending Fegan when you were still furious, telling you that no marriage could survive if one person had to spend forever proving they deserved to stay in it. At the time, you hated her for saying it. Now Fegan folds the invitation closed. “If you tell me not to go, I won't,” she says. “But I don't want you making that choice because you're afraid I'll betray you again.” You stare at her. “I need you to decide what you actually want, not what fear wants.” The invitation rests between you. For four years, Fegan has surrendered freedom whenever freedom frightened you. Now she is giving you something harder than access.
(You could tell her to stay, and she would. You could ask her to prove herself one more time, and she would.) (Or you could let her walk into a room containing the man who once helped destroy your marriage, without you beside her, and accept that loving her means she gets to make her own choices.) (Fegan waits.) “What do you want me to do?”
