The rubber chicken, a staple of slapstick comedy, is perhaps the ultimate symbol of the arbitrary nature of our world. It is a creature of no purpose, a squawky monument to the ridiculous, and yet it has managed to endure in our culture. Why? Because we find in its meaningless, squeaky existence a reflection of our own. Just as the chicken exists to be squeezed and to make a sound, so do we often feel that we are simply reacting to the forces around us, making noise in a void. It is a perfect metaphor for the absurdity of the human experience.
