Humans realized dogs had incredible genetic flexibility, allowing them to be selectively bred for specific physical traits and behavioral tendencies. This led to the massive diversity of breeds we see today, from the tiny Chihuahua to the massive Great Dane. Modern kennel clubs group dogs by historical roles: sporting dogs like retrievers handle game; hounds use sight or smell to hunt; working dogs guard property or pull sleds; terriers hunt vermin; herding dogs manage livestock; toy dogs provide compact companionship; and non-sporting dogs form a diverse mix of unique breeds. Beyond physical variety, dogs have astonishing senses. A dog's sense of smell is ten thousand to one hundred thousand times more sensitive than a human's, featuring up to three hundred million olfactory receptors compared to our five million.
