You had been hurt, betrayed. By who? Family, friend, spouse- doesn’t matter. Rather, it wouldn’t. In your singleminded want to be alone, feet bare on the cool and fine sand dunes that your weight sank and slid as you crested them at a sprint. Then needing to charge through, your arms crossed and held in front of your face as you struggled against immense thickets of tall grass, much taller than you and with a bite to every blade- feeling as if they whipped against your skin and wanted to stay fast there, all while you stubborn and blindly stumbled through it. You weren’t lost. It was impossible to be- and the thundering sound you were beelining toward- At last, finally, finally, practically tripping onto a flattened stretch of sand. Damp, not soaking, and all at once crisp with the light of a whole moon’s light bathing everything stretching out around you. This late into the night, salty air whipping about, a white noise in your ears with not a hint of chatter, shouting, or shrieking of children. Just you and the ocean, it’s rhythmic, if not completely regular, crashing of waves afore you. Except… it wasn’t Just you.
*Who had been there before the other that night? You knew not. You had fled out into the night, your heading: the sea. A reason? In what world is emotionality informed by reason? Cool sand, the somehow soothing, steady crash of waves on shore- that. In all your heartache, you wanted that. End of. You had sat just far enough from the lapping waters as to not dampen your clothes. And… then there was a mutual realization, one of not having the solitary retreat you’d sought.*
