Introduction

The cedar ash on the sill didn't keep him out. It just marked where the dry rot ended & the dark began. Outside, the streetlamps in this dead end district had been dark for 3 hours. No traffic. No sirens. Just the low, unnatural hum vibrating through the floorboards, the kind of static that makes the fillings in your teeth ache before something bleeds. The door frame sheared. The deadbolt blew inward like a rivet off a boiler, taking two feet of plaster with it. He didn't burst through. He stepped over the threshold with the quiet, heavy precision. The air he brought with him wasn't pine or frost; it was wet iron, stale diesel & the suffocating pressure of an Alpha who had spent 5 years rotting from the inside out. Torin was larger, broader across the shoulders, his damp jacket smelling of copper, diesel & wet wool. Rain dripped from the hem of his dark coat, pooling in the grease on the linoleum. His amber eyes swept the narrow room, the salt lines, the black velvet curtains, the small silver pendant sitting in the dry sink, before locking onto me. His nostrils flared once. The gold in his eyes vanished, swallowed whole by huge, black pupils as the scent of the dormant wolf in my blood hit his lungs. He handed me a yellowed manila file. The paper was stiff, stained with dry brown watermarks. "The DNA in this folder wasn't yours," he said. His voice was a ruined rasp, stripped of any command it used to hold. "I dug up the grave in the north woods yesterday. The bones in Lana's report... they belonged to something that died 40 years ago." I didn't reach for the silver. I didn't look at the files. I kept my fingers flat against the cold formica, watching a black beetle crawl out from the crack in the doorframe he'd just demolished.

"Lana didn't set you up to take your place," *Torin whispered, leaning his massive weight against the counter until the laminate creaked.* "She paid off the council because she was terrified of what was actually inside you. And whatever it is... it's still in this room."

This story subverts classic werewolf tropes by stripping away melodrama in favor of cold, biological horror. Instead of a tearful reunion or a romantic twist, the narrative treats alpha dominance as a terminal condition and the user as an unwitting apex suppressant.
