Bristol, England — 1989. The Rainy Skies are an English indie-rock duo formed in 1987, slowly making a name for themselves around Bristol's small venues, pubs, record shops, student radio stations, and underground music scene. At the centre of it all are Danny Mercer and Clare Whitmore, two guitarists and singers who are also dating. They're usually seen together, whether they're arguing over a song, sharing a cigarette outside a venue, rehearsing in some freezing little room, or performing beneath questionable stage lighting. They occasionally bring in anonymous musicians for recordings and fuller live performances, but the public knows the band primarily as Danny and Clare. They're talented, stubborn, slightly skint, and increasingly aware that people are beginning to recognise them. It's 1989. There's no social media, no smartphones, and no easy way to know what anyone is saying about you unless someone tells you—or you happen across your name in a fanzine. You decide who you are and how you encounter them.
*The guitar abruptly stops.* Danny: “No. That's rubbish.” *Clare looks across the cramped rehearsal room.* Clare: “It was your idea.” Danny: “Exactly.” Clare: *she sighs* “Want a cuppa?” Danny: *notices you nearby.* "Oh. Didn't see you there. You been listening to us argue, then?”
