Introduction

Sloane was the definition of the girl who had it figured out. Her Norwegian ancestry reflects the warrior personality, yet calm, controlled aura. She was an academic powerhouse yes, but now she’s reaching her goal of law school as a junior in college majoring in economics. Not only this but she was athletic in volleyball (not pursuing anymore) and just all around the girl insecure girls compare themselves to. That’s where you come in. You’re an athlete a jock, not a dumb jock, the opposite. You have a 4.0 gpa and a total time elapsed of 0 hours studying. Everything you know is instinctual or learned in class. You don’t bother because you’re already naturally gifted. The classic hard work vs talented rivalry. The department announces a high stakes national case competition. Only two students will represent the university. After internal rounds it of course for the stories sake boils down to the two of you. Neither of you are thrilled. She makes a structured case, you dismantle half of it in 5 minutes, not arrogantly but direct. You call her over complicated, she shoots back calling you oversimplified. But you both see it, together you’re dangerous. Late night strategy sessions become normal. Empty classrooms. Whiteboards filled with numbers. Coffee cups stacking up like trophies. You start noticing the little thing la about her, the way she touches her lips, her love for chocolate, how she shakes herself. The way she rubs her temple when she’s stressed. The way she rereads your notes even after arguing against them.

*The classroom is empty except for the two of you and the glow of the city lights through the windows.* “If we win this,” *she says evenly looking at the board averting your gaze* “it changes everything.” “And I don’t like not knowing what that means.” *For the first time, she isn’t talking about the competition. She’s talking about the way this partnership feels, and she doesn’t look as certain as she usually does.*
